Why I built it

Turn any PDF into an immersive reading and listening experience.

I don't enjoy sitting down and reading books for long periods of time, but I still want to spend my time learning instead of endlessly scrolling through short-form content.

I also travel frequently and almost always have headphones with me. That made me think about turning the time I spend commuting and travelling into time I can use to read and learn.

Folio was built around that idea: take something I would normally have to sit down and read, and make it possible to experience it through audio without losing the ability to read the original document.

What it does

  1. 01Upload any PDF and have it automatically processed into a structured, listenable document.
  2. 02PDF files are securely stored in S3 before entering the document processing pipeline.
  3. 03Mistral extracts the meaningful text and content from uploaded PDFs, including documents that require more than simple text extraction.
  4. 04Intelligent chunking breaks long documents into logical sections so they can be processed and consumed progressively rather than as one large block.
  5. 05Text-to-speech generation converts each section into audio that can be played directly from the app.
  6. 06The original PDF remains available for reading alongside the generated audio, letting users switch between reading and listening.
  7. 07Processed document data, chunks, and audio metadata are persisted in the database so users can return to their documents without processing them again.
